10 April ’26 – Toilet seats & Ghee

I spent the night at Kim’s, she’s bought a new toilet seat to replace the ancient one that came with the loo 25 years ago. It only took about 10 attempts and three hours across 2 days to sort it. Anyway it’s OK now and she’s pleased with it. She got to gloat when she was able to remove the old seat from the hinges when I had failed , (didn’t want to break it was my excuse and I’m sticking to it.)

BTW. As I’m typing this Artemis II has just splashed down having flown around the dark side of the moon. Well done them, stupidly brave and professional. I was 9 years old when Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the Moon and remember the excitement of those days like it was yesterday.

I want to make some Michelin star Hasselback Potatoes…. Needs a lot of clarified butter which I know as Ghee. I suspect there is a difference, probably to do with the temperature used, but I’m not sure (or bothered). So I went off to Aldi and got 4 packs of their cheapest unsalted butter, that’s a kilo for about £7. Amazon sell various brands of Ghee for between £13-£16. So making it myself would be a big saving. All it involves is melting the butter and simmering it to evaporate the water content. The solids either float to the top or sink to the bottom, these can be skimmed off and used for other stuff. What’s left is pure butter oil with all the taste of butter but with a much higher smoke point than full butter. Anyway… it worked, I ended up with 750g of Ghee and 150g of solids/skimmed froth. That’s 900g in total meaning that the original butter was 10% water.

I’ll put some pics of my Ghee making …. Here

The Hasselback potatoes I want to make are from the Fallow Youtube channel. They’ve replaced Chef Jean Pierre as my fave cooking channel. (Jean Pierre is still brilliant)
